Slavery in Canada
• Slavery did exist in Canada, but not in the traditional sense

Africville Monument
• Area populated by mostly just black people
• Black loyalist - inhabitant of British America of African descent who joined
British colonial forces during the American Revolutionary War. Many were
slaves held by Patriot rebels, and decided to join the British in exchange for
The Crown's promises of freedom.
• Neglected by the city and the residents were evicted and their homes
destroyed
• In 2010, a monument was built called Africville in apology

• She was caught, imprisoned and severely tortured
• She was sentenced to death by hanging
• Her executioner was also a black slave
• Her body was left hanging in public for days
• She has become emblematic of the way Canadian slavery has been
suppressed and ignored
