In order to explain in what way a science fiction writer is a prophet, i would hae to begin by explaining the reason whereby prophecy has any significance whatsoever. If life never changed, if society remained static, if as things are they always would be, then obviously we have no need for prophets. This is fortune telling, and with that neither science nor science fiction has anything to do. isaac asimov the science fiction writer as. Well, you know, that is one thing that every science fiction story does, and in that respect every science fiction story is a true prophecy, and every science fiction writer is a true prophet. Because by actual definition, a science fiction story deals with a society different form the society today by virtue of changes in science and technology, and therefore it is today the only relevant form of fiction.
