Need sustainable development: better technology, tax control, new laws, alternative energy sources: habitat loss: major factor across taxonomic groups. Agriculture, other habitat loss: climate change, overexploitation: killing species faster than they can replace themselves. Fig 4. 7 coral reefs: carbon fixation from co2 emissions causing ocean to raise in acid. Fig 4. 8 & 4. 9 fragmentation of forests 100km area. The out lining of the forest is unprotected and leaves 64 ha from 100 ha. Then add in railroad and road crossing each other through land. Cuts up land into four segments of 8. 7 ha each given a total of 34. 8 ha edge effects. 400 m from edge into forest: increased wind disturbance, elevated tree mortality, altered species composition of leaf litter invertebrates.
