Document Summary

Police in high stress situation; injury is frequent. Officer burnout; after working many years, officers start working poorly. These depictions of police come up in the news but also in fictional representations. News and media turn undramatic crime stories into dramatic ones sensationalization of crime creates fear . This sensation does not illuminate real crime but creates false depictions and crime manipulation and production. Public policy or perception is this distorted because of news stories that make the world seem very frightening. Criminologists can study stories and see how media is sensationalizing crime. We lose sight of the fact that our criminologist knowledge is in itself, a representation of crime and perception. I. e. , criticizing a story arguing for an increase in crime rates even though it is statistically wrong is not what this course is about. You can further criticize your government statistics and the methods used to gather this data and see how that may be inaccurate.
