Essentially the romans had a bad experience with kings and it"s the 500 bce decided to become a republic. It is democratic, officials are elected democratically and pol vote for these officials. It lasted 500 years and it"s the longest democracy in history. It ended with a lot of political instability with civil wars. Formed an alliance with each other and turned on each other in various political ways. The ones who were allied with each other actually turned on each other. In pretty much all of these cases, these people are forming armies and turning on each other. Many romans lost their lives during this time. The empire had all of the institutions of the republic. But he slowly took their power and gave himself the powers.
