Longer films started to come in 4-6 reels. Sitting and watching something for a long time was new to audiences. Training was also there, maybe live orchestra. Question of appropriation: adopted a selected and not imitation of sound effects; not simply replication, it was selected; emphasize selected elements, or it would be empowering for the audience. Commercial sound arrives image and sound synchronization. Gomery silent to synced sound was not a very dramatic transition. Experimentations with sound as a way to get audiences interested in a new form of storytelling. Sound effects help to direct/guide both understanding of the narrative and emotional attachment to the narrative. All comes out of ww1 military investment. 1907: lee deforest develops the audion 3 electrode. 1922-1925: deforest partners with theodor case to develop the phonofilm (sound on film) system took this to various studios, but no one was interested in this synchronized sound method.
