Some jargons are open (jargon you will find at a hardware store). It is part of in-group behavior, it signals group membership. The whole idea of jargon is to limit the range of meanings. Coronary thrombosis heart attack. (medical term vs. common term) One enters the realm of popular discourse, where as the other one does not. Metaphor does play a role in the discourse of medicine. It is a level of usage, determined by the degree of formality required by social situation. The choice of one expression or the other is not random or optional. The highly formal one is considered to be polite and is used with strangers, superiors, and so on you would either say good day or even goodbye. The mid formal expressions is used basically with those whom we see frequently and with whom we have developed a degree of familiarity you would say bye or see you later .
