VPMA93H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Binary Form, Concerto Grosso, Ternary Form
Document Summary
More complicated ternary form used to make longer works (particularly during the classical era) Popularized by beethoven, mozart, franz joseph haydn and others. Exposition: two sets of thematic material are presented in contrasting keys; first and second subject groups (in different keys ex. I = c major v = g major) Development: the material from the exposition is developed freely or new material is introduced; v -> i. Recapitulation: the two sets of thematic material from the exposition are reiterated but this time both in the home key (tonic); i -> rewrites v in i so it can end. Exposition: minor key (1st subject group) vs major key, triumphant (2nd subject group) Development: kind of all over the place, seems lost, variations of the motive. Recapitulation: sounds like the opening (1st subject group), next section sounds like 2nd subject group (major) but ends in minor (1st subject group)
