Document Summary

I can take an empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space whilst someone is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged. Yet when we talk about theatre this is quite what we mean. Red curtains, spotlights, blank verse, laughter, darkness, these are all confusedly superimposed in a messy image covered by one all- purpose word. The social arrangement of space and time for the purpose of focusing human attention on an aesthetic event. Aesthetic: beauty and visuals; primarily made to appeal to senses. Drama: the enactment of human conflict in the present tense = dramatic theatre. Performance: a show (eg. tonight"s performance of rent); to describe thing theatrical, but not theatre; discussing everyday life with theatrical terms. Richard schechner: defines performance as twice-behaved behaviour (eg. religious ritual. Erving goffman: the performance of self in everyday life ; theatre metaphor of the society.
