Last week we talked about visual search, which deals with how attention operates in space. But we don"t only select, or attend to, objects in space, we also routinely attend to objects in time. Rapid serial visual presentation (rsvp) task: a task where stimuli appear in a stream in one location of the visual field (typically at central fixation) at a rapid rate. Your task: decide whether or not there is an e in the following stream of letters: fixed at the red cross stimuli is rapidly flash at you detect a letter e . New task: decide if an animal is presented: yes. New task: decide if a forest is presented: yes. We can typically perform these rsvp tasks with fairly high accuracy with very fast presentation (~50ms per item, sometimes even faster)
