Maintenance fail, due to biology (loss): manage losses. Baltes 3 strategies to develop (soc model): all used to preserve quality of function. Selection: involves directionality, goals, specification of outcomes; start elective becomes loss- based selection afterwards. Elective: based on choice, loss-based: based on loss of first choice (choose food)
