Document Summary

Functionalist perspective: infinite of possibilities of growth (all choice), no predestined path. Everything is about the ratio of gain to loss. Only last few years you start to suffer from losses even though losses accumulate and overtakes gains over development. Development occurs mostly the first half of life -> old age is young . Evolutionary selection benefits decrease with age: functions/genomes all decrease over time (bio reality) Age-related increase in the need for culture: everything that assists us is culture; only to maintain functioning. Efficacy of cultural decrease with age: cultural assistance decrease in efficiency. Grow in the beginning (growth): acquire skills, easiest to obtain during early years. Maintenance fail, due to biology (loss): manage losses. Baltes 3 strategies to develop (soc model): all used to preserve quality of function. Selection: involves directionality, goals, specification of outcomes; start elective becomes loss- based selection afterwards. Elective: based on choice, loss-based: based on loss of first choice (choose food)
