PSYC18H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Amygdala, Razor Strop, Striatum
Document Summary
Some emotions are stronger than others, some empower others. Typically we think of the negative emotions taking over the positive emotions for example depression. But this is not the only way it happens, people who have a manic disorder they have a bunch of positive emotions that can also be maladaptive. So it can be skewed either way, towards positive or negative. To be extremely scared of a spider and not being able to be in a room with it is an inappropriate emotional response (e. g. phobias, or agrophobia = being scared of people). Increasing emotion regulation is important for mental disorders. What appears to be disordered is actually adaptive, albeit to an atypical and challenging context: All the emotions we may have a disbalance of, for example if we look at depressed people, the key is the person has increased negative affect which is usually sadness.
