Document Summary

Psyc12 lecture 8: benevolent sexism and aversive prejudice. They are underrepresented in political decision making bodies and in leadership positions (for an overview, see barreto et al. , 2009). It is important that by portraying women as wonderful but childlike, incompetent, needing men to protect them, and therefore best suited for low-status roles, benevolent sexism justifies gender inequality. Intro to benevolent sexism: overall, attitudes towards women are positive, more positive than towards men (e. g. iat, while (cid:449)o(cid:373)e(cid:374) (cid:374)ot t(cid:396)eated e(cid:395)uall(cid:455), the(cid:455) a(cid:396)e (cid:862)lo(cid:448)ed(cid:863), benevolent forms of sexism are prevalent, even among liberals. Intro to benevolent sexism: the acceptance of bs by women: e(cid:373)e(cid:373)(cid:271)e(cid:396) fiske(cid:859)s te(cid:396)eot(cid:455)pe co(cid:374)te(cid:374)t model, (cid:449)hi(cid:272)h suggests that complementary stereotypes may lead group members to voluntarily accept rather than to revolt against group-based inequality. In line with this, researchers have found that benevolent sexism is often not described by men or women as an expression of gender discrimination.
