The role of affect & emotion in understanding stereotyping & prejudice: study how do emotion affect our tendency towards prejudice. Is there a prejudiced personality: the authoritarian personality, social dominance orientation (sdo, political conservatism, needs for cognition, structure, & closure, disgust sensitivity. Researchers became interested in how emotion affects cognition and decision-making. Bodenhausen (1993) distinguishes incidental from integral affect. The former is affect that is elicited by situations unrelated to the intergroup context, whereas the latter is affect that is elicited within the inter-group context and involves the stereotyped group. Incidental affect is characterized by feelings that have nothing to do with the intergroup context that nonetheless influence social judgements and lead to stereotyping because affect generally impacts cognition: you just happen to have ex. Integral affect can arise merely from thinking about the out-group: happen to do with a specific type of group, like a specific person base on their race, sex, age.
