Document Summary

When the retinal cells are activated, they synapse first to the lateral geniculate nucleus which is in the thalamus. The retinal ganglion cells that leave the retina are segregated by way of their output and how they are synapsed within the lateral geniculate nucleus. Magnocellular cells receive input from the rod cells, which means they are sensitive to light and motion. The parvocellular cells differ in their morphology; they are smaller and they receive most of their input from cones and are sensitive to color. Input from one visual field is segregated into two layers; layers 1-2 receive input from magnocellular cells and layers 3-6 receive input from parvocellular cells (in the diagram) Layers 1,3, and 6 receive input from the contra-lateral visual field, and layers 2,4, and 5 receive input from the ipso-lateral visual field (you do not need to memorize this)
