PSYB10H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 6: Stereotype Threat, Contact Hypothesis, Learned Helplessness
Document Summary
3 distinct areas of social influence: conformity, compliance, obedience. Look at everyone around you for cues on what to do. At the time didn"t seem ridiculous; conformed to fashion trends e. g. oh that looks cool i"ll go out and get a pair not necessarily pressure/fitting in . We look around us, what"s everyone else doing. Elevator video example (in an elevator, you stand in the same direction everyone else is in, should i be wearing my hat in here) Norms are ambiguous, looking to other people not necessarily for fitting in. Person doesn"t necessarily have to be of higher status. E. g. someone asking for spare change, neighbor asking to help shovel the snow. E. g. police officer, superior in a firm tells you to do something. In many situations, right answer = ambiguous, we look to others for the right source, conform to them because we think they know better than we do.
