Sympathetic nervous system: heart rate increases, blood pressure rises, blood sugar rises, blood ow directed to internal organs, breathing deeper and faster, digestion stops, perspiration increases, adrenal glands secrete adrenalin. Whether something is a stressor or not is psychological so how you view or think about it. Psychology can have positive effects, in terms of dealing with stress and with respect to health in general. One person"s stressor can be another"s best friend. In some cases, people are making more of stressors than they need to be. Sympathetic and parasympathetic system cannot be simultaneously active. Best way to ght stress is to learn how to ip the switch and relax. Conceptualization: learning about stress and coping, becoming better at appraising situations. Skills acquisition and rehearsal: stressor-speci c problem solving, emotion regulation and self control, maladaptive responses as cues. Application and follow through: imagery rehearsal over progressively more dif cult situations, apply coping skills to unexpected.
