People speak in terms of personality types but now psychologists think it makes more sense to talk about personality traits. Maybe personalities arise as a mixture of different traits and a combination of those traits determine our ultimate personality. Looked for every word in the dictionary that are used to describe people. Asked people to think of certain individuals and ask them to what extent they would say they had certain traits some traits go together so if you"re high in one, you"re high in another. 1936 found that one english-language dictionary alone contained over 4000 words describing different personality traits. If you"re thinking of any given person, you can categorize how relevant that trait is to their life. Using factor analysis, they saw which factors clustered together and reduced the list of traits to 16 basic traits.
