Queer = an intentional term (not a slur, reclaimed term) > literally, strange , odd , outside the norm: making the strange familiar and making the familiar strange . Not just problematic for people beyond the binaries, but also for people within the binary. Like feminist analysis, queer analysis seeks to interrogate boundaries of sex, gender, and sexuality: reality as a lot messier than we like to believe, heterosexual -> bisexual -> homosexual. Most fall at some point between the two binary positions. Sexuality is fluid and difficult to categorize, and as a result the rather simple identity categories we use to name sexuality can never fully represent any individual"s actual, varied, sexual drives. (ott and mack 216) Heteronormativity refers to a diverse set of social practices that function (1) to perpetuate the heterosexual/homosexual binary and (2) to privilege heterosexuality. (ott and mack 216) -> heterosexuality is the norm.
