Document Summary

Week 1 intro to critical media studies: media is simply information that comes to us through some indirect means. Through some channels: media is information that comes through us through some medium, there"s information, the transmitter and the receivers of the info. This mediation is also vulnerable to all of the complexities that come with that kind of sociality when it comes to the organizations, the groups, ideologies, protocols etc. We have this communicative space that often seems very straight forward but it actually very layered: we learn about the world primarily in two ways, somatically our actual physical senses. Our physical engagement with the world, things we directly engage: the vast majority of what we learn is symbolically we learn through others. Most of the things we learn are through others, our family, friends, teachers, political leaders, media. Media and socialization form the vast majority of what we know and how we know it.
