Document Summary

Another name for social dialect is ethnolect or sociolect. Ebonics is a blend word of ebony + phonics. Ebony means black and phonics means sound or speech, so black speech. This term was created during a conversation between robert williams and ernie smith. They created this term to avoid any negative commendations. Term used for black people in north america, west africa and caribbean. There was a movement in california in 1996 to teach children african. America english in schools so children can learn the difference. But it was later stopped because people thought it was a movement or way to teach the kids african american english. When africans were brought to the us they only spoke their tribal languages. They were brought as slaves and were sent to the southern states, where there were white people who were their masters. But these white people spoke non-standard southern american english.
