Isolation plays and important role in language maintenance. When speakers of varieties of the same language constantly communicate with each other. Bilingual speakers alternate between languages in once conversation. Situational: usually in a social context, using one language for a particular context, another language for another: can be between languages. Sitting with the family having dinner, then the convo goes from casual to prestigious way, but still in the same language: can be between styles, formal to informal. Code switching usually happens at the end of the clause. When you insert one word from a different language into the clause it"s not considered code switching, its call nonce borrowing. Bilinguals code switch because they are not competent in one language. People code switch because sometimes one concept can"t be said in another language. There may not be word in english that could describe a feeling in spanish. This is one of the ways that languages borrow words from each other.
