Lecture #1: introduction the study of cities through a set of spatial lenses - scale, place, locality, the streetscape, the urban environment etc. A very broad field of geography, which includes some very different approaches, theories, and concepts to explain cities and urban life (marxian, poststructuralist, humanistic etc . A set of understandings about cities that have been produced at certain times in certain places a product of its time. We are often told that sometime in the last decade, for the first time in world history, some claim that more than 50% of the world"s population lived in cities. In developed countries over 75%, in the global south, over 35% live in cities, and growing rapidly. More than ever, understanding the world requires an understanding of cities, and their impacts on life styles, life choices, life possibilities, and the environment. Cities have important similarities, but also differences.
