Document Summary

In the play richard iii , there is a rise and fall to richard"s power - he tries to woo elizabeth (to get to her. The wheel of fortune image: daughter) similarly to how he had wooed ann, but this time it does not work. Lady fortune spins the wheel where characters rise and fall; sometimes depicted as blind. Medieval concept: someone falls from the highest tier of the wheel to the bottom through some misfortune, but is later risen again to the top. This idea is in operation in richard iii , and works through prophecy - people who hang on to the wheel. He counts on the other men entreating him to take the crown. He understands emotions and how they work, but he does not have any empathy towards them - this is how he manages to be very cruel to others. Clarence dies not believing that richard has sent the murderers to kill him.
