EESA06H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Erté, Multi-Junction Solar Cell, Seismic Gap
Document Summary
Uniformitarianism: the present is the key to the past. Igneous rocks can be classed into 2 categories: acidic (silica-rich; typical of continental rock) and basic (iron-rich and silica poor) Magma in volcano with lots of silica = very stiff. Volcanoes whose lava doesn"t flow are very dangerous; they erupt very explosively. Rift basin: crack in continental plate which widens to form oceans; dominant rock is flood basalts. Failed rift is one which failed to develop into ocean. All oceans are the by-products of the breakup of pangea. Fig 2. 1: take a look at the diagram in the book and study it in some detail; need to know the types of different margins. Terrains were small microcontinents that collided with west coast of n. america, became smooth and were embedded in the continent. Hot spot: a smaller form of plume (10s of km in diameter).
