EESA06H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Seismology, Paradigm Shift, Deep Structure And Surface Structure
Document Summary
Lecture 3 (probing the earth"s deep interior) - monday, january 18, 2016. Easiest way to study for exam is look at end of chapter questions. Earthquakes useful b/c they produce energy in the form of seismic waves. We use them to determine structure of the planet. Hard to go deep underground b. c humans cannot survive in high temperatures beyond a certain depth. We can use seismic waves to map earth"s interior. Earthquakes can occur up to 700 km below surface. The breakage of rocks produce seismic energy; such breakage occurs for brittle rocks, not soft, which is why earthquakes don"t occur below such a depth (rocks too soft in mantle) 1891 nobi earthquake: paradigm shift in earthquakes and science of seismology. This was demonstrative evidence that earthquakes produced by faults. It also helped japanese figure out that wooden, flexible buildings more suitable for quakes. Fig 3. 5: surface waves do most of damage b. c wave motion is very violent.
