EESA06H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Mid-Ocean Ridge, Seafloor Spreading, Mantle Plume
Document Summary
Lecture 4 how oceans widen: iceland & the atlantic. Topics: mid-ocean ridges: modern and ancient (ophiolites) The sediments along east coast canada (about 5-6 km down) ind out & gas (when the sediments are being washed of there are organic material where other organisms get buried into the sediments and release hydrocarbon over ime. Hibernia: biggest oild deposit on the east coast. Coninental shelves are important for oil and gas. Very steep slope called coninental slopes (lots of mass lows sediments slump down the slope which are triggered by usually earthquakes) North american plate, western margin: vancouver lies there sits on top of cascadian subducion zone. Opposite margin: located in the middle of the atlanic ocean called passive margin" pushes rest of the plate toward the west. Eurasion plate: one of the largest plate being pushed eastwards (also called passive margins) Locaion of acive plate margin of eurasian plate: mediterranean plate the alps (mountains which has intense condiions)
