EESA01H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Conservation Biology, Climate Change Scenario, Climatology
Document Summary
Maintaining habitat (in situ conservation = maintaining habitat particularly within protected areas: protect biodiversity and prevent species loss, by keeping people out, major role of government and ngos in conservation biology is protected area establishment/enforcement. Environmental change may be irreversible and protected areas not enough to save species. Ex situ conservation includes preserving species in zoo, aquaria, seed banks, arboretums. Captive breeding = breeding and raising of individual species in zoos and botanical garden with the intent of reintroducing them into the wild. De-extinction = bringing things back from extinction. Weather = the conditions of the atmosphere over a short period of time: daily temperature, short term precipitation, wind, humidity, wind chill, fog, uv index. Climate = how the atmosphere behaves predictably over long periods of time: describing regions by long term temperature, precipitation, storm intensity, and frequency. Generally, climate is predictable in the long term. Climate information describes long term, predictable environmental conditions within a given region.
