BIOD33H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Pulmonary Circulation, Crocodilia, Circulatory System
Document Summary
Shunt is where blood normally doesnt go. We don"t have shunts in our hearts. In amphibians, and non-crocodilian reptiles theres ability for blood to cross over, from right to left or left to right. In normal conditions its left to left and right to right. Opposite happens when we have a right to left shunt. Normally it gets sent ot the lungs, but now its bypassing the lungs, coming in from tissues and instead of going to lungs, its sent back to the systemic circuit, so bypassing the lungs. Blood that"s coming back from right side would normally be sent out to lungs, but since its not breathing, the blood gets sent back to systemic circuit (right to left shunt) Makes sense bc animal is under water, not breating, so no point in sending blood to the lungs so we send it back to the systemic system.
