Document Summary

2 sets of reactions: light dependent, calvin cycle. Structure of chloroplasts: thylakoid: internal membrane of chloroplasts arranged in grana. Thylakoid membrane contains pigment called chlorophyll: stroma- fluid like substance where grana are in. Electromagnetic radiation is form of light energy. Exists as a wave at specific wavelength. Visible light- electromagnetic radiation humans can see. Each photon/wavelength has specific amount of energy. High energy photons have short wavelength and vice versa. Pigments- molecules that can only absorb light at specific wavelengths: chlorophyll- (a and b, absorb red and blue photon, reflect green light, cartenoids, absorb green and blue photons, reflect red photons. Absorption spectrum- graph to study pigments, plots wavelengths absorbed by pigment molecules. Action spectrum- shows rate of photosynthesis vs wavelength. Long isoprene tail subunits allowing them to be imbedded inside membrane. Head consists of ring structure with central mg atom (light is absorbed here) Absorb wavelengths of light not absorbed by chlorophyll;;
