BIOC17H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Myelin, Tetraodontidae, Entacapone
Document Summary
Do environmental stimuli contribute to heroin tolerance: chronic heroin users have significant experience using heroin and thus exhibit an appreciable tolerance for the drug. Accidental heroin overdose is unlikely: conditions such as unusual injection procedures and using a drug in different locations may account for heroin overdose in experienced users, pharmacokinetic properties have a lot to do with how people use drugs. For example, cocaine users prefer to smoke or snort the drug rather than consume it orally. These drugs still act on the brain in the same way, but they differ in how quickly cocaine reaches the brain. Most drugs are metabolized by enzymes in the liver and then eliminated from the body: most therapeutic drugs are administered orally. The drug passes through the stomach into the intestines: the term liberation is used to describe the process of drug molecules separating from pill or solution.
