Document Summary

Studied in a lab setting that can easily be manipulated. Many model organisms have a short cycle and can study many generations. Can use this research to maintain health and treat diseases. Genetic model progansism: can tolerate genetic mutations, numerous generations followed, more mutants can be analyzed, detailed genetic maps can be created, ex. Experimental model organisms: these organisms have robust embryos that are easy to manipulate study, ex. Genomic model organisms: have a similar genome to a human, ex. Target identification: model organisms is used to identify the specific molecular target the novel drug will target. Disease modelling: model organisms are used to determine which mutants lead to diseases. Use to ensure efficacy of a drug before applying to humans. Zebra fish were used to identify mutants that affected the ability to regenerate damaged tissue. Help with drug development and provide us with more knowledge about the human body. Mutation does not always mean phenotypical change.
