Document Summary

Qualitative traits = characteristics for which phenotypes fall within discrete categories. Population genetics focuses on genotypes and allele frequencies in populations. Quantitative traits = characteristic which phenotypes show continuous variation among inidividuals (e. g height) Traits determined by the environment and many mendelian genes (at many loci: eg height, sprint speed, intelligence. Focus on: phenotypes and heritability: statistical properties of population traits (e. g mean, variance) Internal and external environment important for development of most traits. Phenotypes of individuals may be different even if they have identical genotypes. Final phenotypes are also affected by abiotic and biotic factors including temperature at which the proteins were developed. Just knowing the genotype isn"t enough because phenotypes can still vary even if the genotypes are the same. Take plants with the same genotype and put them in different environments: high, medium, and low elevation. Result: dramatic differences in height and form due to environmental differences.
