BIOB34H3 Lecture 2: Lecture 2 September 8th
Document Summary
Recap: physiology is the study of how animal machines work. Work: making something happen that cannot happen without energy, the input of energy required in order to make something happen, work is measured in joules (j), the same unit as energy. 1 j = n m = kg m2 / s2. Eventually at some point we have repaired this ship so many times that it"s made of completely different pieces of wood than it was originally. Just the molecules are different, but how those molecules function is the same! Without energy, molecular structure disappears over time (due to the 2nd law of thermodynamics and the ever increasing entropy in the universe). The universe always moves towards a state of greater randomness, so in the absence of any external energy inputs molecules tend to lose whatever structure they have. This is what makes us different from other objects in the universe.
