BIOB34H3 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Chemical Bond, Isomaltose, Parietal Cell
Document Summary
Digestion : the animal mediated breakdown of food molecules into smaller chemicals. Fermentative digestion: involves breakdown of food molecules by microbial symbionts, cow harbor large microbial symbionts in their gut that help them with digestion of food. Digestion can also be classified from where they occur. Extracellular digestion : occurs in an extracellular body cavity: outside of the cells, most common. Intracellular digestion: involves taking food particles into specialized cells via phagocytosis prior to digestion- sponges, coelenterates, flatworms, some molluscs: food particles are taken into the body into specialized cells and then digestion occurs in cells. Carry out some extracellular digestion due to muscular pharynx that they can protrude from the body and secrete via that pharynx some digestive enzyme to liquefy the prey they are trying to eat. They also have some gut epithelial cells- these proteases secreted won"t allow for the protein to be completely from outside.
