Document Summary

Chemoheterotrophs-animals get their energy as well as their carbon through the consumption of organic molecules. Ingested chemical energy: all the energy that is stored in the organic molecules that animals are consuming. These molecules are known as fecal chemical energy. Animals take electrons off of the organic molecules and pass it onto oxygen, which releases energy. The laws of thermodynamics only applies to isolated systems, where no matter or energy is exchanged with the surroundings (ex. Universe: animals are not isolated systems, they are open systems. The laws of thermodynamics apply to animals in an indirect manner because they are a part of the universe. First law: total energy of any isolated system is constant with respect to time (you cannot create or destroy energy). Only looks about total energy and not all the different types. Does not prohibit energy change from one form to another.
