Document Summary

Integrins bind a speci c motif found on several ecm proteins. >known as the rgd motif = arginine-glycine-aspartic acid. Transfer any stress from the ecm network to the cell"s cytoskeletal network. Integrins can change their conformation dramatically in response to binding of proteins on the extracellular side or the cell interior. The change in conformation makes them either active or inactive. Go from bent (folded) inactive form to extended, active form. >causes the cytosolic tails to bind various cytosolic proteins as a response. Can also be a post-translational modi cation, like phosphorylation. >causes them to bind to various ecm components. Points of contact between the cell & the ecm. >ecm is part of the substratum or surface to which the cell is attached. >force is seen to be exerted at focal adhesions as the protein interactions literally allow the cell to grab on the surface.
