Document Summary
Basic plant needs: co2 + light + h2o (-> glucose), h2o + o2 + minerals (-> metabolism) Capillary action - draw (l) up @ small tube thru adhesion to tube walls & cohesion between water molec (adhesion > cohesion) -> max: draw 1 m. > (limitation) x efficient @ tall plant; affected by width of tube/capillary. Transpiration - most important force; driven by sun -> heat up leaves -> water inside evaporate & becomes (g) -> escape thru stomata -> water loss. @ xylem vessel -> cohesion between h2o molecules pulls up cont. string of water @ vascular bundle -> max: 130 m; needs adhesion of water to xylem walls. Gymnosperm: only tracheid -> narrower & smaller gaps /pits -> less efficient water transport vs angiosperm: tracheid + vessel element -> wider ve & larger opening between adj cells. Symplastic transport: thru cell & plasmodesmata of parenchyma -> cm protein (active transporter) determine which minerals may be taken up.
