Document Summary
Stoma (made up of 2 guard cells loose h2o and air exchange) **one cell layer thick & alive (does not photosynthesize) Perennial plants: wear and tear of epidermis: exposed to nasty insects, growth of stem: ripping apart of epidermis, thus sealing is needed, function of periderm: seals a plant beyond the epidermis. Xylem: tubing system which connects the roots to the rest of the plant, and transport water & minerals which is taken up from roots to leaves. Phloem: continuous system which transports minerals/sugars produced in leaves towards the rest of the plant. Xylem cross section: due to all the structures on angiosperm, it is much stronger, hence angiosperm is called hardwood and confers are called soft wood. Vascular system xylem & phloem: interior portion is mainly: xylem cells (where water is transported, on top of vascular bundle: collenchymas cap. Xylem as support: tracheids (transport, support, vessels (transport, support, parenchyma (storage, fibers (support) **all lignified = hard, sturdy: phloem (transport)
