Document Summary

09 january 2018 / module 1: plant form and function. Tree of life - plants: basal tree of life , bryophytes , lycophytes, ferns, gymnosperms, angiosperms. Conquering of dry land by vascular plants. Overtime developed cuticle, stomata, and vascular tissues. Ex: clubmosses (400), quillworts (150), spikemosses (700) Appeared first in the carboniferous period (large amounts of coal) Ex: whisk ferns, horsetails, true ferns (majority, takes up 75%+) Appearance varies from super tiny to 25m trees. Each mature leaf contains clusters of sori (which goes through meiosis) One sorus = many pinhead = many sori/spores. Once spores are matured, the pinhead opens and releases sori. Germinating spore (egg and spermatozoid) are fertilized on the prothallium gametophyte and creates an embryo. Embryo becomes a developing sporophyte (growing from the prothallium) as well as developing roots. Lower side of prothallium contains (cid:496)antheridia(cid:497) = males. Upper side of prothallium contains (cid:496)archegonia(cid:497) = females.
