Document Summary
11 january 2018 / module 1: plant form and function. Plant cells and plant tissues: undifferentiated cells: meristems, differentiated cells, simple plant tissues, complex plant tissues. Totipotent/meristematic cells divide creating differentiated cells but is still kept to produce more differentiated cells and meristematic cells to continue the cycle. Start with undifferentiated totipotent cells and divides to make determinate cells which through mitotic growth it gives rise to more copies. Meristematic cells in plants = stem cells in animals. Factors that limit indeterminate growth: soil nutrients, meristematic slowdown, high hydrolic pressure (top desiccation: undifferentiated cells: meristems. Through division process, produces more meristematic cells & differentiated cells. Primary meristems (top of plant, shoot and root meristem) Located at the very tip of the shoot. Produces the secondary meristems in the leaves. Gives rise to the rest of the cells that are needed. Located a bit further down from the tip of the root. Produces the secondary meristems in the roots.
