Physical barrier divides a population causing no genetic flow: vicariance, dispersal. Founder effects cause intial stages of divergence. Mutations can give rise to different alleles in groups. Selection and genetic drift can lead to independent changes in allele frequencies in groups. Subgroups form within a population occupying the same geographic region. Specialization or genetic changes in subgroups reduces gene flow through: host races, chromosomal mutations: Dispersal among islands can lead to repeated divergence.
