Lecture 1: anthropology takes nothing for granted, four fields of anthropology - sociocultural, linguistic, biological and archaeology, primatologists work with primates. There is also forensic anthropologists that investigate bones. Its about society and culture = sociocultural anthropology: we study gender, nation, state, language, class, religions rituals etc. Anthropology is the study of other people but nowadays another important aspect is to study ourselves. Make the strange familiar and the familiar strange. Instead of focus on grammar and sentence structure. They study language dialects, how language influence our world views, how language change and how language takes inference from other languages. Ex- from when you are a baby you grow old. If you are arabic you read right to left. Therefore you would be growing from old to a baby: anthropologists go to a society where they study and stay there to engage themselves in the everyday lives of the people they study.
