Document Summary

Concerns with institutional care (nursing home, assisted living facility) Home care is more of a neo-liberal option, cheaper, humanitarian. The language of these agencies talk about the instrumental practical aspects of labour. Only see them for hours of work. This practical doing care is questioned by researchers, not all that care is about. Problematic in the homes, because private and informal. Neo-liberal cutbacks= increasing attempts to impose practical task definition of homecare. Care is not only tending to practical needs, emotional component as well. Caregivers used friendly language to describe the relationship between clients. Do work beyond the call of duty. Giftgiving- meal and gifts to each other. Difficult to put into words, rules and regulations don"t offer any way to conceive of this. Limits to practice that real resistance would have. Conditions and context of work makes it suited to extract unpaid labour for free. Need to formalize an ethic of care, this is what is required.
