Competence- understand full cost and make informed decision. Resources- time and money to acquire info and to carry out desired choice. Relies on parents having money to make desired choice. Yet this is not the case for many (especially vulnerable) individuals in need of care. Paula england, professor of sociology, new york university, formative sociologist of gender and care looked at gender assumptions in care + realtioships. National longitudinal survey of youth: care work is badly rewarded b/c its associated with women, women of colour. Care as a (cid:498)quintessentially female-identified activity(cid:499) wages and state support for care. Suggests that cultural biases deprecate/devalue women (and people of colour), limiting: care work pays less than would be expected, based on education and other requirements, gendered assumptions within welfare states lead to limited support for unpaid care.
