Lab readings: wagner chapters 1 & 2: using spss and getting the data. This data is available either on the server or hard drive of the lab computer. A pdf version of the codebook is also available. You can click on the data (if the data is in spss format) or alternatively, open spss. When you open spss, you will be prompted to select a data file. Select the 2002 gss data that was uploaded on the server. Note that the spss data editor window is a spreadsheet much like excel. The standard view has variable names at the top, and each row in the data represents a case or observation: recoding variables. Turning a continuous variable into a categorical variable: In output, name, call it age_new in the name field. Click on old and new values, then click on range. In range, put 18 in the first field and 24 in the second.
