Individuals do not automatically learn social behavior; it is an acquired by socialization. Socialization: learning process by which people acquire the skills, knowledge, values and motives necessary to perform social roles: role: a set of expectation for a person occupying a certain social position (or status, example: parenting. It can be broken down into 3 categories. Prescribed: refers to eh behaviors that are required of a status (habits beliefs, motives) Example: students reading, taking notes, working towards a certification/degree (motives) Ascribed: roles that have been assigned to us by others, can be positive or negative. Proscribed: a role that is not permitted to an indivuals based on the other roles that he or she holds, they are in violation of a harm. Example: player who is a husband rest of the society will call a cheater. Sometimes roles are so stro(cid:374)g that the(cid:455) (cid:271)e(cid:272)o(cid:373)e a (cid:373)aster role/status, a(cid:374)d so(cid:373)eti(cid:373)es it is(cid:374)"t the one we hope to be our master status.
