Primary law of land- guarantees fundamental legal rights equality rights for all citizens in canada including accused. Provides protection for individuals and ensures fairness during legal proceedings. All components of the criminal justice system must conform to the charter. An act or omission that is prohibited by the law. Omission- failing to report child abuse or failing to provide necessities of life. To be convicted of a crime they must have done something criminal and usually must have intend to do it.
