Hobbes rejected divine right of kings- argued political authority are based on indv. self interests on members of society, no king has authority to rule. Locke- believed we needed protection, also rejected divine right of kings. Rousseau- argued against idea that monarx were empowered to rule, people were more free, ppl have the right to choose the laws and should be democratically chosen (including women) enlightenment. It substituted faith in the power of reason in the form of faith in the power of religion. Challenged that crime was rooted in demons.
