Document Summary
Race: a social construct used to distinguish people in terms of one or more physical markers, usually with profound effects on their lives. Ethnicity: perceived cultural markers that are deemed socially significant. Ethnic groups differ in terms of language, religion, customs, values, ancestors, etc. Development of racial and ethnic labels, and ethnic and racial identity, is a process of negotiation. Racial or ethnic identity vs. imposed identity. Race is an inadequate and even harmful way to think about human biological differences . Belief visible characteristic of group indicates group inferiority + justifies discrimination. Bigotry: open, conscious expression of racial views. Friendly racism: subtle and hidden expressions of racism. Involves one race or ethnic group subjugating another in the same country. Prevents assimilation by segregating the subordinate group in terms of jobs, housing, and social contracts. Retention of racial and ethnic culture combined w/ equal access to basic social resources.
